Disco Hairstyles
Think Farrah Fawcett, John Travolta, or any of the other famous celebrities from the seventies and you will get a rough idea of what disco hairstyle was all about. Everything about the seventies was about making a statement and the same held true for the hairstyles from the era. Voluminous and big; these were two words that defined the hairstyles of the disco era. Primped and combed to look big and then held in place using a hairspray, we give you some of the most popular hairstyles of the era.
Hairstyles from the Disco Era for Women
Women of the seventies aped hairstyles that many popular celebrities sported and three of the most famous women's hairstyles of the disco era are described below.
Feathered Hairstyle
If there is one person who can be credited with the hairstyle being as popular as it was, then it is Farrah Fawcett. In order to get your hair styled into the feathered haircut, all you need to do is use a blow dryer and a curling iron so that you can style your hair. The hair needs to be given volume using the hair dryer and then the curling iron is used to style your hair away from your face so that they roll outwards. The face is further accentuated by bangs which are also curled away.
Poker Straight Hairstyle
With women who wanted to retain their long hair look, a popular haircut was to style their hair in such a manner that it had a long, sleek, and sophisticated look about it. Straightened, glossy hair was the call of the day and it could be accentuated further with bangs. The hair was almost always combed with a center parting and the hair was then allowed to float over the shoulders. Hairspray and anti-frizz serum was used in order to achieve that sleek look.
Wedge Hairstyle
The popularity of this hairstyle can be credited to ice skater, Dorothy Hamill, after whom the haircut was also often called the Hamill Camel. Hair was cut really short, almost like a bowl cut, in a rounded fashion around the forehead and the sides. At the back of the head though, the hair was cut in such a manner that it resembled a wedge. The popularity of this style soared because it was an easy to maintain look that allowed you to party the night away without stressing about the look of your hair.
Hairstyles from the Disco Era for Men
Often one wonders about what a man can do with his hair to change his appearance? Well, if the seventies was any measure to go by, then there is a lot that a guy can do to his hair. Let us take a look at some of the most popular hairstyles for men from the disco era.
Mullet Hairstyle
Think Patrick Swayze and you will know which hairstyle we are talking about. This haircut had a rugged, masculinity about it that set it apart from many of the other hairstyles of the period. The haircut was such that it was worn short at the top and the front, and even at the sides, but the back was allowed to grow long, pretty much untamed in certain ways.
Comb Over with Bangs
If you have medium length hair and you need to create a chic hairstyle, then this would be something that you would opt for. In the seventies, men usually had long bangs that were side swept. They also sported long sideburns which enhanced the look of the long side bangs.
Unisex Hairstyles from the Disco Era
While there were many different hairstyles that men and women could opt for, there were some hairstyles that were common for both genders. In this section, we talk about these unisex hairstyles.
Afro Hairstyle
The Afro was one of the most popular hairstyles of the Disco era and it was a style that both men and women embraced. This style was especially popular amongst youngsters of African-American heritage. An Afro was cut in such a manner that it had a helmet shape which was then puffed out to make the hair look huge. The hairstyle was perfect for those individuals who had tight, curly hair.
Shag Hairstyle
Another hairstyle that was common amongst both men and women is the shag hairstyle. If you have ever watched Brady Bunch, then you would know which hairstyle is being talked about. The name of the hairstyle, which is still quite popular, comes from the fact that it tends to be messy with the hair cut into layers of different lengths. The hair at the top is cut into many different layers and the rest of it is allowed to remain longer.
These were just some of the most popular disco hairstyles of the era. Hopefully, this article has helped you understand the influences on haircuts that emerged from the cultural revolution of the decade.

How to Tattoo Hair: Tips
The steps involved in tattooing hair are not very difficult or complex to understand but are certainly diverse. There are a lot of ways in which you can get a hair tattoo and knowing all these ways are important since you might consider getting the best. Mentioned below are a few tips that comprise methods and tricks which you should be aware of while getting yourself a hair tattoo.
- Start with trimming your hair for a common hair tattoo. Keep the length of your hair approximately up to 1 cm and not more. If there is a particular design that you want, show it to the stylist and ask him to make the same.
- If you want letters such as R.I.P or F.E.A.R written on your scalp, keeping the length of your hair a little more than 1 cm would be proper. However, if you want a design like that of a tribal tattoo, it is advisable to keep a desired hair length.
- If you want to keep a Mohawk style, make sure the designs you get done on both the sides are exact mirror images or your head might look a disaster in reality, no matter how good it looks in the pictures on the web.
- A proper hair tattoo stylist is required if you want to get a unique design with minute details in it. Most of the time, for bold designs, trimmers are sufficient as tools. However, carving blades are essential if you wish to opt for fluid lines.
- As mentioned, hair tattoos last for a period of around two to three weeks. But this depends on how fast your hair grows. Faster the growth of hair, more the chances of losing out on the tattoo design. If you want to get a hair tattoo, you can consider getting it done during vacations, if it's not possible otherwise.
- Maintain your hair tattoo from time to time to make the design stand out and glow in the dark. You can also color the hair with a color of your choice to make it look different from normal ordinary hair tattoos.

Wavy Hairstyles with Finger Waves
How to get wavy hairstyles with finger waves. Get easy to do methods by finger waving or get vintage hairstyles.
- Wash your hair with shampoo and place a towel around your hair
- Part the hair a bit on the side and comb it down. Apply the waving lotion on your hair while it is still damp distributing it evenly throughout the hair. Apply the lotion one side at a time to prevent it from drying.
- Decide where you want the first ridge to be and place your index finger above that position. With the comb pointing a bit up slide it under the finger and draw the comb around the fingertip for about one inch. Do not take the comb out of your hair but lay it flat against the head to hold the ridge. Place the middle finger above the ridge you create it and the index finger on the tip of the comb's teeth. Pressing your fingers gently on the head close them together to emphasize the ridge.
- Keeping the comb pressed against the head turn it so the teeth can face down. Comb the hair in a semi circular motion to create the s shape while holding the two fingers on the ridge to keep it in place.
- Keep doing the same thing until you reach the crown. Make sure the ridges and the waves formed match.
- When you are done start forming the second ridge but this time doing the opposite from the first ridge. Start at the crown and comb the hair downwards from the tip of the index finger towards the base of the index finger. Do all steps from the first ridge in reverse to complete the second one.
- For the third ridge you will follow the steps from the first ridge but start it from the hairline working your way towards the back of the head.
- For the other side of the hair apply waving lotion and follow the same steps as you did with the first side.
- Allow the hair to dry and comb the hair back from the face gently. This will make the waves look soft.

Katy Perry's New Choppy Bob Hairstyle
The latest pop star that recently got a stylish makeover is Katy Perry with her pink blonde choppy bob hairstyle. Katy ditched her shoulder-skimming locks in favor of a trendy chin-length bob with softly angled layers and choppy ends. Get more details about her new look and find out how to make it work for you!
When celebrities go shorter, it's exciting. Now a major pop star is working the short hair trend that shows that short can definitely be sweet. Katy Perry debuted a brand new look, featuring chin-length, choppy layers and a pastel blonde color.
Katy Perry's always been a beauty icon, refusing to follow the footsteps of Barbie-blonde haired peers. This time, she stands out from the crowd by opting for a bob-like shape haircut coupled with softly angled lines. Her layers follow the shape of the head perfectly before ending in soft, choppy ends. A little graduation underneath the nape rounds hair out in back.
Before copying Katy Perry's new bob hairstyle, talk to your stylist about how can it be suited to flatter your facial shape. For instance, if you have a longer face, try taking the hair a bit longer to balance out the length; for a wide jawline consider going a bit longer than chin-length, whilst a square face shape will look best with more layers around the front to frame and soften features.
When styling Katy Perry's look, the key is to keep it quite natural, without over-styling it. After washing, spritz on a generous amount of blow-dry lotion to prevent damage. Use a round brush to blow-dry some volume into the roots and then run through with a flat iron. Finish off with shine spray. The overall look should be soft and natural, not weighed down with too much styling product.

Braid Designs for Men
Many men with long hair or with extremely curly hair find their hair very difficult to manage. Though, most men prefer short hairstyles for various reasons. Short hair is easy to maintain, easy to care for, and very common too. Although, long hair is distinctive and can be a head turner when styled properly. If you have long hair and are thinking of getting a style that helps you manage your hair with the least of effort, then consider braid hairstyles. There are various super cool braid designs for men, so you can choose some unique looking styles. Cornrows are one of the most common braids for men, and can be braided to form various designs. There are mini or micro braids for long and medium long hair too. Herringbone and English braids are easy-to-do styles if you have long hair. You can also try out short or long deadlocks, if you like the Rastafarian look.
Different Braid Designs for Men
Simple Singular Braids
Men with long hair or with a rat's tail haircut can try out some simple singular braids. These braids are easy to create, and with just a little practice you can do it by yourself. The simplest to create is the English braid. The English braid is created by dividing the hair in three equal sections. Then with alternate tying, the hair is braided into an English braid. You can also try the fishbone braid. This is a complex looking braid, which is created by adding hair strands to two hair sections in an alternate manner. With some practice, you will be able to create these awesome braids for men.
Cornrows
Cornrows are one of the most popular hair braids for men. Many film celebs and sports celebs can be seen wearing cornrows. Cornrows were a common way to style hair in the Sub Saharan Africa for many years. This hairstyle today has gained popularity again due to the hip hop culture. Cornrows are cool looking braids, however, they are also one of the most painful braiding techniques. So, it is best that you go to a stylist to get them done. To create cornrows in your hair, you will need hair that is at least 4 inches long. You can go with simple linear styles, which will take less time and will be less painful. But if you want some cool looking styles, then there are many from which you can choose. You can go with zigzag patterns, curved braids patterns, swirl patterns, etc. Or you can mix and match two hair braiding designs to create a new pattern altogether. Complex patterns will take longer, it can take a full day at a salon to get them done. If you want cornrows which can be created in a short period of time, then go with the half cornrows hairstyle.
Micro Braids
Mini braids or micro braids are another type of braids, which are great for medium or long hair. Mini or micro braids are nothing but very small and fine braids, which are created using the English braiding technique. A small section of the hair is taken, and with each section a braid is created. This way all the sections of the hair will be braided. You can create different braid designs using micro braids. The design depends upon the hair section. You can take a square shape hair section and then start braiding, for a cool look. You can also take round or triangle shape hair sections.
Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are also common long men's hairstyles. These are not exactly braids, but are a popular long hairstyle. They are done by back combing and rolling hair. The shape of the dreads can be very small or can be very thick, depending upon your choice. The conventional size of the dreads is pencil thick. You can tie a ponytail to make your dreads more manageable.

If you want to add more to your braids, then consider using a few accessories. You can use bandanna or headbands. You can also use beads to secure the hair ends of mini hair braids. Don't overdo the hairstyle using colorful hair accessories. Also, you need to oil you hair, shampoo it, and condition it regularly, to keep the braided hairstyle in a good condition.

Brit-rock hairstyle: men’s hair trend for 2011 / 2012
The Brit rock hairstyle is a hair swept forwards style for young guys that gives them a fringe. It’s to be worn with nonchalantly and with swagger. It’s not necessarily British, nor is it necessarily the domain of rockers, but what it is is cool.
Suitable for guys with everything from straight to curly hair, the Brit rock hairstyle is all about length through the top. It’s also about texture. That texture can be a trait of your hair, or can come about courtesy of hair cut that introduces lots of slicing, chipping, razoring and deep point cutting.
How to make the Brit rock hairstyle yours.
If you’re thinking of making the Brit rock your own hairstyle it’s not as simple as sweeping your hair forwards. It takes the right hair cut and the right products. To help you with that, Fashionising.com sat down with Melbourne hair stylist Annika to help us put together the following how to guide.
The hair cut.
For most guys the length and cut of their existing hair style isn’t going to be suited to the Brit rock hairstyle – you might be able to experiment with it, but to get it perfect it’s going to take a trip to a hair dresser / hair stylist. Here’s how you get the hair cut.
Understand what you want
As you can see in the photos above, there’s more than one way to interpret this forward men’s swept hairstyle. Slick, messy, short, neat, rugged, relaxed. We could go on. But with so many options, ensure that you have a clear sense of the particular interpretation of this hairstyle (or a small selection of styles) that appeals to you. The two things that you should consider in advance is the length of the fringe that you want, and whether or not you want a neat interpretation of the hairstyle. The descriptions that go with each of the pictures above should also give you a pretty clear idea of any other attributes you may want.
Converse
Once you know what you want, make sure that you can communicate it to your hair dresser. And make sure they listen. Explain to them what you like about the Brit rock hairstyle, what you don’t like, and what you’re ambivalent about. Doing so will allow them to tailor an interpretation of it that suits your particular face shape and lifestyle. It’ll also allow them to create a one-off interpretation that you’re happy with.
Don’t be afraid to save the pictures in this ‘hair how to’ and take them with you. If you can’t print them out, put them on your smart phone. The majority of men don’t explain themselves all that well when they visit the hairdresser – if you’re one of them, let a picture do the talking for you.
Be informed
Once your hair cut is done and dusted pay careful attention to the way it’s styled. If you’re not sure about any of the styling steps, ask – you want to know that once you leave the salon you can recreate the look yourself. Things that you want to be sure about are the right product to use, the way you dry your hair after it’s been washed, and the way you move your hands through it to place product.
A good hairdresser will automatically explain all of this, but if they dont you have every right to ask – you’re paying for it to look good even once you’ve left the salon.
Styling it: the hair products to use.
Perhaps you’ve already had this men’s fringed hairstyle cut or you weren’t happy with your hairstylist’s product suggestions. If that’s the case, here are some of the products you could use to style the Brit rock.
For texture without a shine
If you’re after a dry look with plenty of texture then use a sea salt spray as your base product – this will give your hair a dry texture and will also add support to the hair so it both holds and has movement. The name gives it away, but your hair is going to feel pretty similar to the way it does after you’ve been for a swim at the beach.
To get the most out of it: wash your hair, spray in the sea salt, and then dry it into your hair with a hairdryer – make sure that you’ve shaped your hair into the desired hairstyle as you dry with a hairdryer (i.e. your hair should be pushed forwards).
Once done use a clay hair product to set the style. Rub the clay across your hands to melt it and make it pliable, then rub both hands through your hair from left to right, starting at the crown and working towards the fringe. That hand movement will ensure that every part of your hair has product on it. Once you’ve worked it through start styling your hair into the final shape that you want to create, arranging your fringe (which is the focus of the hairstyle) as desired. If you want to increase the amount of separation and texture, use the tips of your fingers.
Product suggestions: Label M sea salt spray, Sebastian Craft Clay.
For texture with a shine
Remember that this is for a shine and not a wet look.
Wash your hair, then towel dry it. If you have fine hair and are in need of volume, work through a volumiser / booster cream. Dry and shape your hair with a hair dryer.
Once done use a styling cream to set and define the style. If you are after a low shine, a styling cream will suffice. If you are after a higher shine mix a splash of a styling oil with the styling cream in your palm and mix it together. Rub the styling cream (effectively a modern, low shine gel) across your hands, then rub both hands through your hair from left to right, starting at the crown and working towards the fringe. Once you’ve worked it through start styling your hair into the final shape that you want to create, arranging your fringe (which is the focus of the hairstyle) as desired. If you want to increase the amount of separation and texture, use the tips of your fingers.
